Robert Berliner

Bob Berliner was a founding member of the intellectual property firm of Robbins, Berliner & Carson L.L.P. for more than 25 years, becoming a partner of the international general law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. following the 1997 merger of the two firms. Having decades of practice in all aspects of intellectual property, and having developed a network of top ranked associate firms in more than twenty countries, he formed Berliner & Associates as a full service intellectual property firm specializing in patent, trademark and copyright prosecution, licensing and litigation, both in the United States and worldwide. He has close familiarity with the special needs of University patent portfolios, and in assisting in the formation and operations of early stage companies. He has patent expertise in many fields, including organic and inorganic chemistry, polymers, petroleum chemistry, biotechnology, solid state electronics, physics, optics,  and biomedical and other devices.  

ARBITRATION

A member of the Intellectual Property Rights panel of the American Arbitration Association, he has served as arbitrator in significant trade secret, contract, and biotech and pharmaceutical patent disputes. 

OTHER PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Mr. Berliner is a member of the Executive Committee of the Senior Lawyers Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.  He is a founding Director and currently is on the Board of the Southern California Biomedical Council and is a member of the American Chemical Society.  He has lectured on intellectual property at the University of California, Los Angeles, and taught trademark and copyright law as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Southwestern University School of Law.

HONORS

In 2007, President Bush's Council on Service and Civic Participation awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award to Mr. Berliner.

In December, 2010, Mr. Berliner received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Colorado.

Named a top rated lawyer in the 2012 edition of "Southern California's Top Rated Lawyers" published as a supplement to "Corporate counsel," "The National Law Journal" and "American Lawyer."

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Mr. Berliner received a B.Sc. in Chemistry in 1956 from The City College of New York and a J.D. in 1960 from Michigan State University.

BAR MEMBERSHIPS

Mr. Berliner is an Emeritus Member of the State Bar of Michigan and  was admitted to practice law in California in 1966. Mr. Berliner is also licensed to practice before the Federal District Courts of Central and Southern California, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.  He is a registered Patent Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

CIVIC INVOLVEMENT

Mr. Berliner is a past Chairman of the Board and current member of the Board of Breathe California of Los Angeles County.
