Dr. Yamanaka focuses his practice primarily on patent and trademark matters, including domestic and foreign patent applications, trademark protection, and client counseling. Before joining Berliner & Associates, he was at the international general law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski LLP. Prior to becoming an attorney, he was a senior scientist and scientific director at various biotech companies, and an adjunct assistant professor at the University of California at Davis. His patent expertise includes such areas as biotechnology and biological sciences, organic and inorganic chemistry, polymers, semiconductor fabrication, and biomedical devices.

Dr. Yamanaka obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, where he studied the genetics and biochemistry of the nervous system. As a scientist in academia and the biotech industry, he cloned, expressed and characterized proteins of pharmacological interest, performed research on the molecular biology of animal viruses and parasites, and developed viral vaccines. He has broad scientific knowledge in biotechnology including molecular biology, virology, vaccinology, and pharmacology.

Professional Activities

Dr. Yamanaka is an active member of the Association of University Technology Managers (“AUTM”). He was on the planning committee of the 2008 AUTM Western Regional Meeting. He was also a speaker at the meeting, presenting a talk on “Inequitable Conduct.”
